“A bottle of wine begs to be shared; I have never met a miserly wine lover.”
-Clifton Paul Fadiman
Nothing like the gift of a fine bottle of wine from friends. Especially a wine that surprises and delights, as in the case of Laura Volkman Vineyards’ 2009 Jacob Pinot Noir.(13.7% Alc., $50). Glorious transparent garnet robe, elegant balance, and seductive finish, with notes of cherry, peat, raspberry, plus hints of gooseberry, currant, and juniper. Others may detect toasted dark fruit notes, per the winery’s own tasting notes; to each palate their own.
Winemaker Laura Volkman grows the grapes for Jacob Pinot Noir on her estate in the Willamette Valley facing the morning sun and using old-world Dijon clones, then barrel-aging the wine on its lees in 50% new French oak. Yet another woman winemaker quietly gettin’ it done. Santé!
Note: Merci to friends Candace and Mike, fellow WV aficionados, for the introduction to LVV. Good call.
