“Have you heard of MentalCase?” I can tell it’s not just the application she’s talking about. It’s our seriously irritated but utterly unflappable server at RN74, with whom I have been discussing wine catalogue applications. I have also been peppering her all evening with requests for photo ops of our pours to feed my wine app. She indulges my demands with well-practiced cheeriness endemic at Seattle’s most acclaimed wine bar.
RN 74, named for Route Nationale 74, the main highway through Burgundy’s wine region, recalculates traditional French cuisine while showcasing a brilliant wine list inspired by WSJ-touted wunderkind Rajat Parr, Mina Group sommelier and co-author of “Secrets of the Sommeliers.”
What better venue for binNotes to celebrate with friends the conclusion of French Wine exams? While RN74’s light shines ostensibly on Burgundian gems such as a Louis Bouillot Crémant de Bourgogne Rosé, Laurent Tribut Beauroy 1ER Cru Chardonnay – Chablis 2009, and Frederic Esmonin Champonnets 1ER Cru Pinot Noir – Gevrey-Chambertin 2009 , stunning ‘off-road’ offerings include a Clos Ste. Magdeleine Marsanne – Cassis 2009, Pascal Aufranc Vieilles Vignes de 1939 Gamay – Chenas, Beaujolais 2009, and Thierry Allemand Chaillot Syrah - Cornas, Rhone Valley 2008.
Quite a selection – not to mention a top-flight food menu. binNotes favorites include the savory Avocado and Butter lettuce salad with Campari Tomatoes, Hills Apple Wood Bacon and Roquefort dressing, an untraditionally plated Boeuf Bourgogne, and a delectable Phyllo-crusted Pacific Dover Sole in Dungeness Crab Brandade and Mustard Beurre Blanc with fluffy (yes, fluffy) brussel sprout accompaniment, plus tasty Rosemary pomme frites and dipping sauce trio. Dessert options include lashings of salacious Profiterols, and ambered Hungarian Royale Tokaj 2007. Whew…quite the celebration…and definite MentalCase material. Santé!
